Can you really close a bank account entirely online? Here's the safe way to do it, plus the security red flags to watch for.
People close bank accounts for all sorts of reasons - maybe your spending habits have changed, you're consolidating your finances into one account, or you simply don't need it anymore. Whatever the reason, it's natural to wonder whether you can just close it online from home instead of making a trip to the bank.
So can banks actually process a full account closure remotely? And if not, what's the safest way to go about it? Here's what you need to know.
Short answer: not yet, at most banks in Vietnam. Closing an account still requires strict identity verification - banks need to rule out fraud, ownership disputes, or unpaid obligations tied to the account, and that level of verification isn't something a mobile app can fully handle on its own. That said, some banks do let you complete part of the process remotely, like submitting a request or temporarily freezing the account, before finishing up in person.
Check what's in the account. If there's money left, transfer it out or withdraw it in cash. If you're carrying a balance - say, on a linked credit card or loan - pay off both the principal and interest before requesting closure.
Make sure nothing's still owed - maintenance fees, SMS banking charges, annual fees, and the like. The bank won't process the closure until your account shows a clean slate.
This part can't be skipped. Bring a valid ID (national ID card or passport) to the nearest branch, fill out the account closure form, and go through identity verification - usually a signature or biometric check. Once the bank confirms there are no outstanding obligations, the account is closed for good.

There's no fully online way to close a bank account yet - the security requirements just don't allow it. A branch visit remains the safest route. At SeABank, we're working to make our processes as simple as possible. If you have questions about managing your account or want to explore the SeAMobile app - which waives a number of service fees - reach out to our customer service hotline or stop by your nearest branch.
