What an e-wallet is, the most common types available, the benefits it brings to cashless payments, and what to keep in mind to keep your account secure when using an e-wallet.
As cashless payments become the norm, e-wallets have become a familiar tool for smartphone users everywhere. From everyday shopping and bill payments to hunting down discount codes, e-wallets make transactions faster and more convenient. So what exactly is an e-wallet, what types are out there, and what should you keep in mind to use one safely? This article breaks it all down.
Under Article 6 of Decree 52/2024/ND-CP issued by the Government, an e-wallet is defined as a means of storing electronic money that lets customers deposit funds, withdraw funds, and carry out payment transactions through electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, or computers. In simpler terms, it's a "digital purse" - an app or digital account where you keep a balance you've topped up, so you can pay for things without needing physical cash.
Vietnam's cashless payment market is highly diverse, and e-wallets are typically grouped by the ecosystem they serve, each designed to optimize the experience for a specific set of user needs:
Each type of e-wallet has its own strengths, but all must be licensed to operate under the regulations of the State Bank of Vietnam.

Although both are cashless payment tools that run on mobile devices, e-wallets and digital banking differ in nature and scope of service.
Important: If you notice anything unusual - an unfamiliar transaction or a suspicious message requesting personal information - lock your e-wallet immediately through the app or contact the provider's support hotline right away to prevent financial loss.
Under Clause 3, Article 6 of Decree 52/2024/ND-CP on cashless payments, e-wallet providers may only allow customers to use wallets that are linked to a payment account or debit card belonging to that same customer. This requirement exists to ensure transparency in cashless payment activity.
Requiring this link helps verify the user's identity and reduces the risk of wallets being opened with false information or used for illegal purposes such as money laundering or financial fraud. It also makes it easier for regulators to monitor money flows and protect users' rights in the event of a dispute or transaction issue.

1. Is an e-wallet the same as a bank account?
No. An e-wallet is a means of storing electronic money provided by a bank or a payment intermediary. It operates independently but must be linked to the customer's own payment account or debit card at a bank.
2. If I lose my phone, will I lose the money in my e-wallet?
There's a risk if the device isn't properly secured. You should lock your e-wallet as soon as you realize your device is missing and contact the provider's support hotline for prompt assistance.
3. Is it okay to link multiple e-wallets to the same bank account?
Yes, that's allowed - but you should monitor your transactions regularly to keep track of spending and reduce security risks.
4. Are there fees for depositing or withdrawing money from an e-wallet?
Fees, if any, depend on the policies of the provider and the linked bank at any given time. Check the official fee schedule before making a transaction.
E-wallets offer real value for cashless payments - from shopping and bill payments to catching the best deals. That said, using one safely means understanding the account-linking requirements and staying on top of account security. Getting familiar with how e-wallets work will make your everyday transactions that much smoother.
