July 1 is not only the first day of the third quarter of 2025, but also an important milestone in online payment transactions, transfers, and cash withdrawals due to the announcement of policy changes by the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV). Follow these steps to switch cards and avoid transaction interruptions!
From July 1, 2025, all ATM cards using magnetic stripe technology will stop accepting transactions across the entire banking system. This regulation applies to all types of cards with magnetic strips, including cards with only magnetic strips and cards combining chips with magnetic strips.
This is an important content in the roadmap to modernize non-cash payments and ensure the safety of the financial - banking system, specifically regulated in Circular 18/2024/TT-NHNN on bank card operations and Official Dispatch 1099/NHNN-TT dated February 19, 2025 of the State Bank.
After July 1, 2025, cards that have not been converted will not be able to perform transactions such as: withdrawing money, depositing money at ATMs and CDMs, paying at POS card acceptance points, interbank transactions... In some cases, the card may be completely locked, greatly affecting the use of the customer's account.
To convert a magnetic ATM card to a chip card, customers can use the following methods:
Method 1: Go to the nearest bank branch or transaction office of the bank that issued the magnetic ATM card in use to convert. Note that it is mandatory to bring your citizen identification card).
Method 2: Register to convert cards via electronic banking applications and receive the card at home or at the transaction point of the card-issuing bank. Each bank's electronic banking application will be different, but in general, the operation can be carried out as follows.
- Step 1: Log in to the electronic banking application of the card-issuing bank from the ATM.
- Step 2: Find and click on "Card Services".
- Step 3: Select "Issuing/Converting cards".
- Step 4: Select "Register to convert card technology".
- Step 5: Confirm the information of the card to be converted and the location to receive the card, then click "Continue" to complete.
