Alert regarding scams and asset misappropriation

In the era of digital transformation and rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), technology-enabled fraud schemes have become increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect. One of the most concerning threats being widely reported currently is the misuse of Deepfake technology—an AI-powered technology capable of replicating images, voices, and videos in real time—to deceive individuals and steal their assets, particularly users of banking and financial services.

Accordingly, SeABank would like to alert our customers to the following common fraud schemes involving image and voice impersonation technologies:

Common Deepfake Fraud Tactics

  • Impersonation of Family Members or Friends via Social Media Accounts

Fraudsters collect photos and voice recordings of victims’ relatives or friends from social media platforms and use Deepfake technology to create fake videos showing them in emergency situations, such as accidents, medical emergencies, or police detention. Victims are then urgently asked to transfer money to provide assistance.

  • Fake Video Calls from Bank Employees

Fraudsters create Deepfake videos depicting individuals dressed as bank employees in professional office settings. They contact customers claiming that their accounts have been compromised or require urgent verification. During the “assistance process,” customers may be persuaded to disclose OTPs, passwords, or install remote-access applications, allowing fraudsters to gain control of their accounts.

  • Fake Video Calls from Law Enforcement or Government Authorities

Fraudsters use Deepfake technology to impersonate police officers, prosecutors, or government officials. Victims are informed that they are allegedly involved in money laundering, drug trafficking, or financial fraud investigations. Under the pretext of “cooperating with the investigation” and avoiding arrest, victims are instructed to transfer funds to designated accounts or provide complete banking information for a purported “temporary account freeze.”

  • Identity Theft to Bypass Biometric Authentication

This is one of the most advanced forms of fraud. Fraudsters use real-time Deepfake technology to bypass facial recognition systems used for digital banking login and transaction authentication. By obtaining photos and short videos of victims—often collected from social media—they can recreate dynamic facial movements capable of deceiving facial verification systems. Once access is gained, fraudulent financial transactions may be conducted through banking, financial, or e-commerce applications registered under the victim’s identity.

Warning Signs of Deepfake-Based Fraud Calls

Customers are advised to remain highly vigilant if they notice any of the following signs:

  • Receiving a video call from a familiar person whose facial expressions appear unnatural, rigid, or out of sync with their voice;
  • The caller urgently requests money transfers due to emergencies such as accidents, hospitalization, fee payments, or account-related issues;
  • The video call is unusually short, of poor quality, or frequently interrupted;
  • The caller requests confidential information, asks customers to perform financial transactions, or requires facial verification in front of the camera during the call;
  • The caller instructs customers to install unfamiliar applications, access suspicious links, or provide OTPs and login credentials.

How to Protect Yourself

To minimize the risk of fraud and asset misappropriation, SeABank recommends that customers:

VERIFY ALL INFORMATION CAREFULLY and thoroughly check recipient details before making any transaction, especially when transfer requests are received through voice or video calls on social media platforms.

AVOID USING PERSONAL INFORMATION such as phone numbers, dates of birth, or names as usernames or passwords for banking applications.

DO NOT CLICK on links requesting password resets, service modifications, or account reactivation when no such request has been initiated. Avoid suspicious links and applications from unofficial sources.

ACTIVATE ACCOUNT ACTIVITY NOTIFICATIONS through the SeAMobile application or SMS services to promptly detect unusual transactions.

NEVER DISCLOSE CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION such as personal information, passwords, OTPs, card numbers, or Card Verification Values (CVV) to anyone, including individuals claiming to be bank employees.

CONTACT THE BANK IMMEDIATELY if your account or digital banking services are locked, or if you notice any unexpected password changes. Please call our hotline or visit the nearest SeABank branch for assistance.

REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES to SeABank or the nearest police authority if you receive suspicious calls, messages, or identify unusual transactions.
